Floristry Question?

Colour Harmonies on the Colour Wheel for Floral arrangements do you include green for the foliage or do you just use the colour of the flowers to decide on which is the correct colour harmony

Floristry Question?
You can design a floral arrangement in any colors you wish, but the trick to it is for your main flowers, go in 3%26#039;s or 5%26#039;s. (Either 3 same flowers of the same color or 5 same flowers of the same color) and either go with an A shape when you are filling it out or go with an L shape. Good luck to you

What is the best way to learn how to use a sewing machine?

I want to learn how to use a sewing machine. I want to learn how to make clothes and quilts. I love crafts. I make floral arrangements, wreaths and photo albums. I%26#039;ve sold many of my designs. I want to learn a new skill.

What is the best way to learn how to use a sewing machine?
Learning How to Sew

Great, you want to learn how to sew! Start out with a good foundation. Learn basic stitches by hand first. A good way to start is to use a kit that teaches 12 functional hand stitches. The kit %26amp; materials can be viewed at:

www.ezstitchsampler.com

Lots of people think they should get a pattern and hop on a sewing machine. This is wrong, wrong, wrong! Anyone who sews should understand the mechanics of sewing by using their hands first. After you%26#039;ve mastered the elementary introduction of hand-stitching, take a class at your local community college if it is offered, or from a fabric store. You%26#039;ll learn how to lay-out a pattern, read the symbols, talk about fabric weaves, and cutting.

A good foundation is better than a shaky one. Starting out blind on a mechanical device beyond your control can be frustrating to say the least. If clothes designing is where you%26#039;d like to go, believe me, it will involve knowledge of hand sewing %26amp; machine work. People don%26#039;t realize the value of hand sewing first. Look at the example of the traditional kimono, why are authentic ones so expensive? Beyond the fact that the fabric is exquisite, it is also completely hand sewn!

Good luck! You can do it.
Reply:Ask a friend who has one to show you how to use it. It%26#039;s easier to be shown than to learn from a book. Use patterns for the clothes. You can make your own patterns for quilts.

Reply:Gray Wolf, For me the best way to learn something is to go at it head on. You%26#039;ll learn better by doing things yourself. That way it%26#039;s your own personal work that you%26#039;ll enjoy %26amp; learn from your mistakes.
Reply:You learn best by doing it hands on. Check for a Sewing for Dummies book. Also this site is great. There are a lot of patterns on here and a lot of them are super easy to figure out. Best of all, you can print them off your computer.

www.youcanmakethis.com
Reply:If you have a machine, start with it. Get out the manual and familiarize yourself with the machine and its abilities. Select a project that is do-able for a beginner and jump in. Get a pattern with good directions - maybe starting with a tote bag or pillow pattern. You will need to learn the %26quot;lingo%26quot; of machines and sewing. Read your manual and just learn what you need to on the project you select. You will discover new things you want to learn to do as you go - each time, look it up in the manual and give it a try. Good Luck.
Reply:Learning how to sew is very easy. Usually the only thing that stops people is the fear of the unknown and making mistakes. All mistakes are a learning process...sometimes mistakes become a new fashion element and/or new creations. In short...dive right in and start sewing.

Sewing patterns are like blue prints...just follow the directions. If you have questions, there are a lot of websites that can help out. For instance this site has projects for beginners, intermediates and advanced as well as an index for anyone who has specific questions: http://sewing.about.com/library/blfeatur...

Another site: http://www.sewing.org/enthusiast/html/e_...

A free online book for beginning sewers: http://craftandfabriclinks.com/sewingboo... You can also check out books in your local library or find some great books at a book store.

Learn to sew classes are usually held at fabric stores or sewing machine dealers and maybe in a community center. They would be a good source as well. Teachers have hints and tricks that make sewing easier that experience has taught them and not necessarily learned from books.

By the way you described yourself, I got the impression that you are someone who can dive right in and learn. Start out with easy projects. Some of the websites I listed have easy projects for your use. Begin with the easy projects and increase the difficulty level as your successes increase. Pattern companies have %26quot;easy to sew%26quot; patterns for you to choose from that includes clothing.

The most important part of sewing for me is the way I embellish the projects with techniques that I have picked up by attending classes with other sewing enthusiasts and by browsing bookstores. Also, check out the sewing shows on the public broadcasting channels with Nancy Zieman, Sue Hausmann, and Martha Pullen etc. They give out lots of information that you can use to add to your projects that make them truly unique.

Just remember, that sewing is a learning process. Mistakes can and will happen to the best of us. Just be easy on yourself and don’t get overly critical or stressed out. Enjoy the creativity it brings you!
Reply:if you are crafty you can teach yourself,

the newer machines are a lot easier and have a lot of really great features, i%26#039;d recommend buying an inexpensive machine, not the cheapest though.

You will want it to be able to do more than straight stitch. Watch for one on sale, you can really save a bunch.

Check the library for books about sewing techniques and beginner projects.

Old sewing books have got great tips and finishing techniques so check thrift stores and such for those old books.

Happy sewing

Wedding color red and yellow july 5 any cool ideas (cheap)?
You can do something as simple as this for a centre piece. Just use a yellow and/or red (fake or real) rose instead of pink like in the photo. If you use a red rose, use a yellow candle, and if you use a yellow rose use a red candle.

http://www.bridalwave.tv/soy%20candle2-t...
Reply:I found some lovely dresses for my bridal party on ebay! Also some jewelry- like a necklace, %26quot;crown%26quot; for my hair, and earrings. ebay! And even the table favors were so reasonable! (ebay, again)

Check into flowers.com for all your floral arrangements- I was so pleased

Have a beautiful day July 5th!!!!!
Reply:dollar stores have plenty of nice things flowers vases decorations can be really nice that is the way i did it
Reply:those are really pretty colors..

http://www.bridalpeople.com/floral-cente... i like those flowers. they are done as bouquets but layed in the middle of the table as centerpieces(cheaper) instead of just laying them down you could buy small vases and set the arrangements in them with some clear stones or something in the bottom (using your bridesmaids and yourself%26#039;s bridal bouquets as centerpieces is much cheaper than buying them seperate) i would also suggest that you have cream or pink tablecloths because of the colors chosen

hope i helped and i hope you have a great wedding!
Reply:I just got done working on my friend%26#039;s wedding, who had a budget of next to nothing (just barely $2,000 if that). We used Oriental Trading Company, because they have good quality stuff for cheap prices. As far as flowers go, look for a flower warehouse. You can buy your own flowers and do simple arrangements on your own. Also, check out local floral shops ask them for help. Tell them what your budget is and they should be more than willing to help. They want your business, and they will work with you to try and find something you like in your price range. The big thing is of course to make your reservations for flower arrangements months in advance so the shop will be available to do the flowers for you.

Also, try the store Hobby Lobby. They have sales every week and they have really good quality wedding and floral items. I decorated for my friend%26#039;s wedding reception and for streamers, some paper lanterns, glass vases, candles, and tableclothes, I definitely spent less than $100, but this was for a small reception.

One last way to save money on flowers-pick one flower that you really love that looks really nice (an orchid, a type of rose) and then build a cheaper arrangement around that.
Reply:Gerbera Daisies! Big blooms for little money!
Reply:red and yellow as in ketchup and mustard? if your wedding is in the evening, your colors should be wine merlot and gold. that%26#039;s the best way to do red and yellow in the evening. having said that, target, walmart, or your local dollar store will be the cheapest way to decorate your reception.
Reply:How about big crystal bowls and vases tied with a bow and filled with lemons on apples?
Reply:Red and Yellow.. hmm, cheap idea would be to hire a clown and have McDonalds.

.
Reply:clear dove or heart confetti for around the centerpieces, silk flower heads scattered on food tables or guest tables for filler. daises are cheap and pretty. you can have special stands or vases for the bridesmaids to set their bouquets after the ceremony, then can double as decoration. round or square mirrors with 3 different size candles. also places like Michaels or hobby lobby have rentals for candelabras and arches. Also, you can place clear christmas lights under a white tablecloth like on the cake table and it adds a nice glow.
Reply:This website RULES for cheap but elegant weddings..... I used for my wedding when I was short on cash.. HERE IS THE LINK: http://www.cheap-chic-weddings.com/weddi...
Reply:It kind of depends on what kind of flowers you like! It also depends on if you want fresh flowers or fake flowers. Carnations are cheap and they come in red. Roses come in red and yellow buy can cost a lot at times! I you want to do roses but don%26#039;t want to pay so much money you can mix roses with a cheaper flower like carnations. If you go with fake flowers they can be very pretty and you can decorate your house with them for years to come!
Reply:Find out what the place can provide. We bought darling dollar store candles and pretty ribbon and the place provided the Hurricane lamps. Very inexpensive and tasteful for a night wedding.
Reply:Why not tie three mason jars together (different sizes), purchase floating candles (start lookings now - after Valentines Day - red ones will be on discount), place a floating candle in each jar, and viola you have a center piece. For gifts for guests, why not use seed packets, or red and yellow spoons with Hershey hugs and kisses on the spoon, wrapped in tulle with the label - Hugs and Kisses from the Mr. and Mrs. A really simple touch was to reprint several of your engagement photos and put in dollar store frames, a couple of these at a table. You can find cheap colored frames - you could use yellow and red frames. You could also frame your invitation, or pictures throughout your dating and engagement. My husband and I did this, and so many people loved them, they still have them in their homes.

How to dry flowers?

My mother in law was recently in the hospital and recieved alot of floral arrangements that she would like to preserve. I have absolutly no idea how to do this ! any ideas??

How to dry flowers?
Hanging flowers upside down is a tried and true way to preserve flowers but here are some other choices that are out there for you to choose from:

Here is a website with lots of tips and techniques in preserving flowers from using hairspray, microwave kits to kitty litter.

Reply:i don%26#039;t how?
Reply:take some tacks or nails..., and hang them upside down on the wall, and put the tack or nail through the end of the stem... leave it like that until the flower feels real dry... its quite simple actually...
Reply:Get them before they die and then hang them upside down...Really.
Reply:to dry a flower you must put the flower into the sun than you pack together

How do you remove acrylic water spills from stainless steel and glass surfaces?

I was using the acrylic water to make floral arrangements and spilled some on my glass table and stainless steel refrigerator door. Oops!

How do you remove acrylic water spills from stainless steel and glass surfaces?
You might be able to scrape it off with a butter knife or something. Or you could use a scratch pad and see if that will take it off. I%26#039;m not sure if you could use something like turpentine or paint thinner to see if that will loosen it up. I don%26#039;t know whether or not it will harm the stainless steel or not but I know it wont hurt the glass. You just need to clean it really well after it%26#039;s done. You could also see if there is a customer service number or website on the back of the bottles to call and see if they have any ideas for getting it off of a surface once it has set up.

I need some general ideas please?

Sarah’s Flower Designs is a fledgling, home-based business in Madison, Wisconsin, consisting of three employees. Sarah, the owner, handles all of the floral arrangements. Her assistant, Mark, handles the purchasing of flowers, related materials, and takes telephone and walk-in orders from customers. Mark also keeps the financial and client records in order. Kim is the delivery driver and makes local deliveries to homes and businesses.

Sarah’s Flower Designs is looking to upgrade its computer system (an older model PC) to help keep up with the growing demand of their customers. They would like to house their client information and order histories on their new system, as well as bill their customers electronically. They also want Kim to have a way to keep track of customer addresses and specific delivery instructions while she is on the road. What IT recommendations would you make for Sarah’s Flower Designs?

I need some general ideas please?
I suggest you use a tracking system. Write down everyone actions.

It seem like Mark is a great worker.

ANYONE WHO CAN HELp????????????????????

hi there! i have a small florist shop and i wish to do some marketting for my special wedding floral arrangements as well as all occasion bouquets of fresh and dried flowers ...my budget is low . can anyone guide me so as to how do i go about it??

ANYONE WHO CAN HELp????????????????????
First of all, you have to have pictures. Customers want to see what kind of work that your shop is capable of doing.

Only emphasize the best of the best that you have. Our shop used a digital camera and printer to create a brochure for new brides. We then placed an ad in our local traders guide, newspaper, and radio station asking the bride to stop by the shop for a complimentary rose. We gave them the brochure and were able to have some 1 on 1 time with them.

We also gave brides who participated in this way, a 5% discount on their wedding.

Word of mouth is by far the best way to get wedding work....so do more than you are asked to do, price your wedding competitively and you will be busier than you ever thought might be possible.
Reply:take pictures of your arrangements, and have them blown up for displays in your windows, or for flyers to give each customer when visiting your shop, or make them binder size and [with plastic sheet protectors] for customers to look at for ideas...the more pictures the better. [ a good way to set up for picture to be taken is to use a black velvet clothe or another color will be nice.
Reply:The best way on a budget is to join your Chamber of Commerce. In most cases, your membership gives you a monthly ad in the news letters/ catalogs they send out. You can also print flyer%26#039;s from your PC, you can save in the long run doing them yourself. Save your old ink cartridges, take them to Office Max and get free paper for doing so, and make more flyer%26#039;s. You can also get ink cartridges on E-bay really really cheap.... Best of Luck....
Reply:Vistaprint.com is a great place to get some low cost brochures or flyers made up. They have templates but you can upload your own photos of your arrangements. You can distribute those yourself or have them put into the local newspaper. Do you have a website?

How do I.......?

How do I go about becoming a florist? My mother in law and I want to start a florist in our current office, we also build and sell houses along with our husbands, and I need to know if you have to have a license, or anything like that. We are really good at creating floral arrangements and things like that, and we thought it%26#039;d be a good side job to get into. Any info on this subject?

How do I.......?
Well.... First I%26#039;d find a florist with whom you would not be in competition and invite them out for coffee. It would be better if it were a referral. Then you could introduce yourself by saying that so and so gave me you name and said you were a really nice guy who might be willing to help me.... I%26#039;m thinking about opening up a shop in (the next town over)... bla bla bla.

Take them out for coffee or a glass of wine and pick their brain. What do you like about owning your own business? What are the challenges you face? How do you overcome them? What%26#039;s your typical day like? That sort of thing.

Ask if you can hang out and help out at the shop for a few days. Really see what%26#039;s involved. Owning your own business without additional employees is no bed of roses (no pun intended), It%26#039;s a 60 or 70 hour a week job. But all that being said, if it%26#039;s your passion with a capital P, then work feels like play.

Then decide if you have the money to open - and a cushion to live on while you build your business and start making a profit.

If you go ahead with it, I recommend you find yourself a networking group and join it. That%26#039;s where a number of business owners meet once a week and feed each other leads. If there isn%26#039;t one where you are, then start one. It%26#039;s a great way to get referrals.

I own a non-traditional business and work with a number of business owners that don%26#039;t WANT to own a traditional business any more, and help them develop addtional streams of income so they can give up what they do and get their lives back. So I%26#039;m very familar with the pitfalls of a brick and mortar business. They can%26#039;t wait to rid headaches involved with it.

And... I wish you all the luck in the world!! Do let me know how you make out. And if you ever want to give up the 9am to 9pm gig, drop me a line.

Wedding decorations?

How many are opting for artifical floral arrangements? I%26#039;m a defiantly having fresh flowers for bouquets and boutonnieres, but found beautiful centerpieces made with artificial flowers. Do you think artificial flowers are tacky?

Wedding decorations?
I had artificial flowers at my wedding, even my bouquet. My mother made them all using silk flowers from Michaels. They were absolutely beautiful and everyone complimented them. You couldn%26#039;t even tell they were fake unless you were very close (Some people who saw my pics asked what florist I used, heheh). And we saved a ton of money! So, no, not tacky at all. :)
Reply:they are very much so tacky! i hate going to weddings and seeing fake flowers. too me i think fresh flowers are gorgeous and really they are not that expensive if you plan correctly on what to use and etc. even if it is just a single long stem rose in a vase on a table for a centerpiece is a lot prettier then a fake arrangement.
Reply:buy what you can afford. they do have some tacky silk flowers, but they also have some that you can hardly tell are fake. I will say, check the price of both. sometimes the prices are very near the same.
Reply:If you like then its all that matters. Plus you can save some if you want! If they look real and you like then then defiantly go for it. You can even recreate your bouquet to match in silk as a keepsake!
Reply:A lot of people use Silk Flowers for decorations!!! I%26#039;ve put together weddings that use fake Trees!!!!! You can always lay some flower pedals around the tables to help contrast the real and fake!!!
Reply:Not tacky at all. Beautiful, lasting, and can be used afterwards.
Reply:Not at all, they can be beautiful and are a great way to save on money. I%26#039;m doing ALL of my floral stuff with artificial.

Centerpiece ideas? Pink/Yellow/Blue colors? help?

I%26#039;m not sure what to do for the centerpieces this a fairytale princess/prince theme wedding.... I%26#039;ve been shown the horse and carriage candle holders. I don%26#039;t really like them. It is very traditional in my family that the centerpieces be something that at the end one lucky guest at each table usually walks away with. I want it to being something they can cherish that makes them rememeber our wedding. Even ideas for floral arrangements are welcome! thanks!!

Reply:I like Mrs. S idea above. i would want ot take that home.
Reply:One idea I saw on here for a cinderella theme wedding was to use ceramic pumpkins. The girl painted them and then she sprayed them with glitter spray. Then you could use glitter, votives, etc around this. I thought that was a unique idea.
Reply:How about a nice bowl with floating candles in those same colors? It%26#039;ll make the room look pretty when all the lights are off except for the candles. Or you can use white candles and use food dye to change the color of the water in the bowl. :)

EDIT - Pastel colored vases with white roses or lillies?
Reply:I like the ceramic pumpkin idea. For a more formal look, you could try to find a crystal or porcelain pumpkin vase, and have your pastel floral arrangements inside. A dozen pastel colored roses would look good. Accent with candles.
Reply:hmmm, little sand castles.....? Pretty paper covered storage boxes filled with silk flowers? How about an actual book of fairy tales with a pretty cover.. .you could drape it with a string of silk flowers.
Reply:Well, I am not sure how many tables you are planning to have, but what if you did each of them after different fairytales?

Maybe you could do a white pumpkin centerpiece? I am sure there are many ways to dress it up.
